SYMPLY has built storage for media and entertainment companies for years and knows the market well. As LTO tape becomes increasingly relevant for long-term and off-site storage, offering LTO products was a logical consequence.

Benefits of the Solution

LTO tape has many benefits over disk and cloud storage. Some of them are long shelf life, lowest cost per TB, and built-in air gap. Especially when capturing video with large resolutions, file sets become so big, that keeping them on disk-based storage incurs relevant costs.

Projects that have been finalized and are no longer used in daily production can and should migrate to long-term archive storage to save cost.

SYMPLY offers a wide range of LTO products, from single desktop drives to rack-mount units. All LTO products are available in either approved SAS connectivity or approved Thunderbolt connectivity on both macOS and Windows operating systems. Many products support both interfaces. The newest addition is an LTO drive with an ethernet connection to allow users to use their existing ethernet infrastructure.

Film and video studios utilizing LTO technology remotely asked for simplified insertion and removal of LTO drives, for transport and easier serviceability. This is built-in of all of SYMPLY’s rack-mounted systems and dual-drive desktops.

Tape cloning for maximum security and off-site storage

Archiware P5 Archive offers MAM-like features to find and use files that have been created months or years ago. Customizable metadata fields and menus offer maximum flexibility when creating a metadata schema.

Combined search helps to locate files matching specific criteria (like camera, resolution, lens type, location etc.). Thumbnails and proxy clips offer visual browsing to find the right file.

Protecting disk-based RAID storage with Archiware P5

In addition to their LTO products, SYMPLY offers a wide range of disk-based RAID storage for media production. High throughput, low noise and portability are some of the key features of their Spark, Ultra and Workspace products. Data on all of them can be protected using P5 Backup, P5 Synchronize and/or P5 Archive.

P5 Synchronize offers mirroring for maximum data availability/failover without restore. P5 Backup secures data to disk, LTO or cloud storage for disaster recovery. P5 Archive offers long-term preservation to LTO and cloud storage. SYMPLY even offers their own cloud service SYMPLY Nebula that is fully S3 compatible and works with P5 Backup and P5 Archive.

P5 Desktop LTO Edition

Archiware P5 is available in a special P5 Desktop LTO Edition for use with up to two LTO drives. Automatic Backups and long-term Archive on LTO, store production data and protect for the long-term. Now both are available in this special license bundle.

S3 Object Archive

The S3 Object Archive allows external products to access the power and flexibility of archiving to LTO and LTFS storage with the P5 Archive module. Compatible with Amazon S3 Glacier Flexible and Deep Archive storage classes, objects received via the S3 interface are archived with full management of tapes, drives, and libraries. Third-party software, including MAM, DAM, and PAM systems, can now effortlessly archive data, also to LTO tape, using their own S3 client interface.

P5 Archive DLM

P5 Archive DLM enables intelligent, policy driven data management throughout the archive lifecycle. With automated data lifecycle management, volume verification, project based storage monitoring, and flexible retention rules, it ensures that archived data remains organized, compliant, and easy to manage over time.

The LTO Roadmap

New LTO generations are introduced regularly with higher capacity and transfer rates, along with new features to further protect your data and content. LTO specifications for backward compatibility up to generation seven of the technology is to write back one generation and read back two generations. The LTO Program regularly publishes and updates an LTO roadmap with information on new generations.

What is LTO-9?

LTO tape was created to combine the strong features of some predecessor tape technologies, avoid the weaknesses and create a standard with multiple vendors.

Enable Kext Driver Support on macOS

To use Symply hardware with macOS, you may need to enable third-party kernel extension (kext) support depending on your Mac model. Apple Silicon and T2-equipped Intel Macs require security policy adjustments through Recovery Mode, while older Intel Macs need no additional setup.
